Seed oils are poisoning your home-cooked meals.
Thankfully, there's an alternative that won't break the bank or shorten your life span.
Beef tallow
Here's how to make your own tallow at home in just a few minutes without toxic seed oils or guilt:
What is tallow?
Tallow is just another name for beef fat that's been cooked down to remove everything but the fat.
Before seed oils came along, tallow was used for everything from cooking, candles, skincare products, soaps, and more.
Here's how to make your own:
First, you'll need beef fat.
Could be scraps from your own cooking or scraps from a trusted local butcher.
Try saving trimmings and scraps in the freezer each time you eat beef. It adds up and doesn't have to go to waste.
Then, you'll need:
- A funnel
- A stockpot
- A fine mesh strainer
- 100% cotton cheesecloth
- Wide-mouth mason jars (any glass jar will work)
Here's how you render your beef fat into precious tallow:
1. Put your beef fat in the stock pot.
You can use scraps and fat you've saved from beef you eat at home or purchase scraps from a local, trusted butcher.
Now it's time to...
2. Simmer and render the fat
Low and slow is key here, too much heat and you'll brown up your tallow and ruin the flavor. Keep a close watch. You don't want a rolling boil.
If it starts bubbling up a bit too much, reduce the heat and stir.
3. Strain
Once all the fat has cooked up into a liquid, it's time to strain.
First, use your fine mesh strainer to remove large pieces.
Then, run it through the cheesecloth to get the smaller stuff.
You want your tallow as clean as possible for flavor and shelf life.
4. Put in fridge to cool
Now that you've got your golden goodness, all that's left is to let it harden in the fridge.
It should last an easy 3 months refrigerated (longer if you freeze it).
And the best part? Anything you cooked with seed oils, can now be cooked with tallow.
5. Become a Tallow Wiz
Check out my recipe for tallow fries, use it to sear a nice ribeye, and replace all poisonous oils and fake ingredients with your new super-fat.
Once you sauté veggies in tallow, you'll be sold for life.
Now that you've left the dark side forever...
This is my tallow journey:
I was at my wits end hunting down food with real ingredients.
So I made my own.
