Can exercise help you overcome your DNA?
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego measured the habitual activity levels of 5,400 women in their late 70s, and also analyzed their DNA for three genetic markers associated with longevity.
They're finding : exercise can overcome genetics when it comes to living longer. Regardless of their genetic markers, women who completed the most β€œlight” daily physical activity each day had a reduced risk of dying compared to the least active group.
Activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to be beneficial. Housework, gardening or even playing music helped in the activity. The bottom line: Moving is good for you. You don't have to hit the gym always
Picking up the intensity pays off even more. The biggest benefit in the study came from moderate to vigorous exercise, and the group with the highest amount accumulated at least 70 minutes a day. Brisk walking is an example of intensity for the study.
When it comes to longevity, helping someone go from being sedentary to doing relatively light activity matters.Vigorous pursuits are even better. If seniors at your home are not moving more, it maybe a good idea to take them for walks or let them get their own water to drink.
