8 harsh truths about marathons
1️⃣You need 100 different things to go right
One bad luck event can derail your marathon
•illness during training
•terrible weather
•cramps during the race
This is what makes a great marathon so magical. You need everything to go right. It’s hard to count on that happening.
2️⃣You are likely to get injured at least once in training
There are very few runners who haven’t gotten injured. Especially with high mileage training. IT band, plantar fasciitis, knee pain…marathon preparation is going to expose the weak points on your body.
3️⃣You will pay a lot of money to destroy yourself for several hours
Some marathons are more expensive than others. But when you account for carbon fiber shoes, gels, travel costs…running is a free sport but competitions aren’t.
4️⃣You will find it difficult not to overtrain
To run your best marathon time you need to push your body. Increase your base mileage, make your long runs longer and faster. There is a thin line between overreaching and overtraining. It’s not always easy to distinguish.
5️⃣Your life will get dominated by your marathon training
Long runs take a long time to complete. After running for a few hours it’s difficult to do much other than lay on the couch. Goodbye Sunday plans. When you register for a marathon you take on a second job.
6️⃣You are likely to have at least a couple blow ups
With each marathon you run it’s inevitable that a few won’t end well. They call it The Wall for a reason. Many runners run smack into it. Your nutrition & pacing have to be point or that final 6-8 miles will be rough.
7️⃣Your first marathon is a gateway drug to many more marathons
Crossing the tape at 26.2 is a feeling like no other. After a few days the soreness fades and you forget the pain and agony of the race. You find yourself looking at the calendar for another one. The cycle goes on.
8️⃣You are at more risk of burning out of running by competing in marathons
Training for and competing in marathons will push you past your limits. Some runners can keep this up for an extended time. But they are the exception. It’s hard to keep doing marathons forever.
9️⃣You should run a marathon anyways
It’s one of the most transformative and rewarding experiences a person can have. The costs, sacrifices and risks involved are what make a marathon so special. You won’t regret taking on this worthwhile challenge.
