Improper breathing causes:
• anxiety
• brain fog
• poor sleep
• poor exercise performance
Here are 7 ways to fix your breathing:
1. Nasal breathing only
Your mouth is for eating, your nose is for breathing.
Nasal breathing:
- Filters air
- Kills viruses & bacteria
- Brings air to body temp
- Stimulates nitric oxide
Mouth breathing bypasses all of these mechanisms.
2. Tape your mouth overnight
This is a great way to train yourself to keep your mouth shut overnight.
Your first night of fully nasal breathing will change your life.
3. Mew
The tongue is nature's retainer.
Unless you're talking or eating, your teeth should be slightly touching with your tongue up against the roof of your mouth.
Depending on your age, this can impact your facial bone growth.
4. Chew
Our teeth and jaw respond to force.
Eat more tough foods and chew gum to place force on your molars.
Check out mastic gum for an extra challenge.
This will also strengthen your facial muscles and make you more attractive.
5. Breathwork
Practice protocols to increase your CO2 tolerance.
Try 4 rounds of the 4-7-8 technique:
Inhale 4 seconds
Hold for 7 seconds
Exhale for 8 seconds
6. Exercise
Use nasal breathing in all but the most intense exercise.
The primary driver of oxygen into your muscles is the presence of CO2.
Over-breathing depletes your CO2 stores, removing the signal for uptake into tissue....quickly leading to muscular fatigue.
7. Consult specialists
If you have structural issues:
- deviated septum
- inflamed turbinates
- narrow upper teeth
You may need more targeted interventions.
Book a consult with an airway-focused orthodontist and an ENT to address these issues.
(Bonus) PARENTS:
Feed your children real food to prevent improper development.
You can gently close their mouths if you notice mouth breathing during sleep.
Think twice about orthodontist recommendations - consult an airway-focused practitioner.
