When sprinters tense up, they:
β’ Lose range of motion
β’ Disrupt the fluid motion
β’ Lead to worse times.

The additional 10% effort caused unnecessary muscles to fire...
Slowing the sprinter down.
We see this the power of the 90% rule when Usaine Bolt ran in Beijing:

I experienced the law of reversed effort during my professional baseball career.
The times I tried to throw as hard as possible:
I would tense up... And throw slower.

All the elite athletes look like this.
They look relaxed, smooth and fluid.
This allows them to play at their highest potential.

1) Progressive Muscle Relaxation

3) Physiological Sigh
1) Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)
Bolt would perform these regularly:
PMR is when you go down your whole body contracting then releasing each muscle.
By contracting the muscle first, you're able to better relax the muscle.

3) Physiological Sigh:
Another one I got from Huberman.
Take 1 Deep breath in, take 1 more breath to fill you lungs, then let it all out as slowly as you can.
It rapidly calms and relaxes the mind and body.
