SALT
One of the most misunderstood substances in the world.
Doctors preach avoidance at all costs. But what if there was more to it?
Salt can be both an incredible resource and a dangerous killer.
This is the BIBLE OF SALT ๐Ÿงต
You have probably been told to reduce your salt intake before.
This is a common direction that has been given by doctors for decades to reduce the risk of a โ€œcatastrophicโ€ event.
While this MAY work to reduce catastrophe, it also deprives the body of something that it craves. x.com
So what does salt actually do for us?
Why do we need it?
What happens if we consume too much salt?
Are the doctors right?
What type of salt should we be consuming and how much of it?
These are all important questions, and I will answer all of them now. Letโ€™s get into it ๐Ÿ”ฝ
What is salt?
Salt is a natural crystal that we rely on for hundreds (if not, more) of functions throughout our bodies.
We need it, simple as that. With that said, too much of it can be a problem, which we will get into later.
First, what it does for us.
Letโ€™s start with Hydration
Most think that hydration is just about drinking water. This could not be further from the truth.
The truth is that hydration is a balancing act between water and salt.
Salt contains sodium, which is an electrolyte that helps pull water into cells.
Drinking too much water without salt will actually have you feeling dehydrated. It is important to get this balance just right.
For this reason, we need to balance our salt and water input. I will get into how to do this correctly in a little bit.
Energy Exertion
We are taught that glucose is what powers the muscles. This is correct.
Our muscles, brains, and bodies use glucose to power their functions.
So how does this have anything to do with salt?
It is actually sodium that helps transport the glucose across the cell membranes.
This allows your body to function and power its muscles and energy-needing organs.
Without salt, you would not be able to power your body, simple as that.
Avoiding salt hurts health & performance
Fluid Balance
On the topic of cell membranes, salt and our electrolytes are what allow fluid balance to take place across cells.
Having the right amount of fluid in each of our cells is essential. We need to be hydrated on a cellular level. Hydration is not just macro.
Sodium attracts water, so it is able to pull water into cells and make sure we are properly hydrated. Lifesaver.
Without salt, our cells cannot function optimally and we will cease to perform.
The Nervous System
The system that controls our every thought, feeling, and movement works due to, you guessed it, salt.
Electrical signals in our nerves and muscles are generated by the movement of sodium and potassium across cell membranes.
The salt is what allows both our muscles and our nerves to fire and work effectively.
Without it, both health and performance would be impossible.
The list of what salt allows our body to do could go on forever:
-Cooling of the body
-Adrenal function
-Acid-balance
-Blood pressure regulation
-And so much more
And having too little salt can be EXTREMELY dangerous:
-Muscle weakness
-Brain swelling
-Fatigue
-Shock
-Coma
-Death
-So much more
So why are we warned by doctors to avoid consuming too much sodium?
Because it comes with some dangers.
What doctors are correct about is that, if too much sodium is consumed, it can lead to high blood pressure.
This hypertension can absolutely increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, and, therefore, death. x.com
So what should we do?
Doctors say to avoid salt because of these grave dangers.
But salt is essential for optimal functioning.
Is there a middle ground?
The middle ground is consuming the right type of salt and the right amount of that salt.
But this isnโ€™t as simple as having a certain number of milligrams each day.
Salt and water are a balance, and I believe we need to treat it that way.
Our body is perfectly designed to crave salt when we need more salt, and to crave water when we need more water.
So listen to it.
When you are thirsty for water, drink it. When you are craving salt, eat food with salt or add salt to your water.
But here is the problem: x.com
You MUST avoid processed food for this to work.
Most people consume loads of processed sodium, and I believe that processed foodsโ€™ sodium is like a trojan horse for our bodies, sneaking salt in without our bodies noticing.
This is not the same as consuming amazing mineral salt. x.com
We need to consume food that our body recognizes completely.
Without processed foods, it is VERY difficult to consume too much salt.
Avoid processed food, and you should be able to balance your salt needs naturally, without making any sort of concerted effort to avoid it.
So what type of salt should we be consuming?
I am a believer in both sea salts and rock salts. Just make sure that you are getting high-quality stuff.
Much of our sea salt supply today is filled with microplastics and other pollutants.
Our rock salts can be packed with heavy metals.
You want unrefined or โ€œrawโ€ salt from a trusted source.
I really like both Redmond Real Salt and Vera Salt. Two great companies with true intentions and a lot of integrity.
It is clear that salt is not the demon that we make it out to be.
In fact, it is 100% optimal for health and physical performance.
This is not medical advice I am NOT telling you to ignore your doctor at all, because it could result in death if you are passed a tipping point.
With that said, we need to stop fearing salt.
Eat a real diet with clean salt while avoiding processed foods and you will feel and perform better than you could ever imagine.
Do not deprive your body of salt. x.com
