A GUIDE TO FRESH HERBS
Their health benefits and their uses
(Thread)
Not only are fresh herbs a wonderful boost of flavor, they also have powerful medicinal properties
Here are my 10 favorite herbs, their benefits, and where to use them:
Rosemary
Has powerful brain boosting properties, as well as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
It is commonly used in French, Spanish, Greek and Italian cuisines. It pairs very well with steak, fish and potatoes. I add it to broth or for basting steak!
Parsley
Contains vitamins K, A and C, rich in antioxidants, and may even have an anti-cancer effect
Parsley is typically used in Italian and French cuisine, as well as making broths, stocks and makes any meal look 10x prettier. I love making a simple chimichurri with it
Cilantro
Loaded with antioxidants, helps the body rid of heavy metals, can lower blood sugar, and even have a neuroprotective effect
Cilantro is typically used in Mexican, Indian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.
Personally, I love adding a bunch of cilantro to my fire roasted salsa, or a nice hot bowl of pho. You can even juice it to get a powerful detoxifying drink.
Mint
May help relieve IBS and indigestion, improve cold symptoms, and even improve nasal breathing, clearing the nasal passage, contains vitamin A
Mint is commonly used in Middle Eastern, Southwest Asian, and Greek cuisines. You can also make an infused mint water with lemon!
Dill
Has small amounts of Vitamin C & A, manganese, folate and iron. It is rich in antioxidants, & can improve heart health.
Dill is very commonly used in pickling veggies, & is used in Scandinavian, Greek & Eastern European dishes. It’s also used with potatoes & chicken soup!
Basil
Basil has a solid amount of vitamin K, and some vitamin A as well. It’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for nausea, bug bites, and much more.
Basil is commonly used in Italian and Southeast Asian cooking. Personally, I enjoy infusing it in olive oil before making a sauce
Oregano
Oregano has antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is commonly used in Italian, Mexican and Greek cuisines.
Thyme
Thyme has been shown to improve acne because of its antibacterial properties, lower blood sugar and improve immunity
It pairs very well with braising meats, potatoes and is commonly used in French and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Tarragon
Tarragon may improve insulin sensitivity, improve sleep, increase appetite and have antibacterial properties.
It is most commonly used in French cuisine, and pairs well with seafood, chicken and is a staple ingredient in béarnaise sauce
Bay Leaf
Bay leaf has been shown to improve digestion, treat respiratory conditions, help reduce stress and anxiety, and fight fungal infections
Bay leaf is used around the world anywhere from Spanish and French to Indian and Thai. It is great for broths and braising meats
