HOW TO BECOME MORE VASCULAR 🩸
Vascularity is the sought-after quality of having highly visible, prominent veins.
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for anyone to achieve a high level of vascularity.
Here are 5 of the most powerful techniques to naturally do so.
Being vascular signals to those around you that you are in peak physical fitness and have achieved a high level of muscle definition.
While genetics do play a role (as they do with anything physique-related), the claim that some people just aren’t vascular/can’t become vascular is simply untrue.
With enough work using the correct techniques, it is possible for anyone to achieve a high level of vascularity.
Improve Blood Flow and Circulation
If you want veins that pop, proper circulation and blood flow is key.
One of my favorite methods for attaining this is through the cold plunge and sauna combo.
These contrasting temperature exposures stimulate blood vessels, promoting dilation and contraction, and enhancing overall circulation.
This has a direct impact on vascularity and the visibility of veins.
Most days I cold plunge (or shower) for at least 3-5 minutes and then do 10-20 minutes in the sauna.
Hydrate
To be vascular, adequate salt + electrolytes are crucial.
Being well-hydrated helps to maintain adequate blood volume, allowing for easier flow through blood vessels.
By consuming a sufficient quantity of electrolytes like sodium and potassium, you will create proper fluid balance, enhancing blood flow and therefore, muscle function.
This will lead to more prominent veins.
I mix sea salt into my water (coco is best) everyday, aiming to consume anywhere from 2-4g of sodium in total.
Lift Heavy Weight
Not only should you be doing this for the plethora of other health benefits, but also because it will aid in creating those strong, veiny arms (and body).
Lifting weights not only builds muscle but also increases blood flow to the muscles (what is commonly referred to as a pump).
This heightened circulation leads to vasodilation, or the expanding of blood vessels which is what makes your veins pop during and after workouts.
Plus, the more muscle you build, the more it will push up against your veins and thus the more prominent they will become at baseline.
I typically aim for at least 4 days of targeted, heavy (3-8 rep range) lifting sessions a week.
Fuel the Pump
Consuming carbohydrates is essential for fueling and maintaining your pump during workouts.
As muscles engage in physical activity, they require energy, and carbohydrates are the primary source.
I have found 1-2 tablespoons of raw honey before a workout is extremely effective for this – plus it tastes great.
With adequate carbs, you’ll get enhanced output from the working muscles which will accentuate your veins.
Low Body Fat %
Lastly, maintaining a low body fat percentage is fundamental in achieving vascularity.
Regardless of if you follow all the techniques laid out above to a tee, you are going to have a difficult time becoming vascular if you have 25%+ BF.
When body fat is cut, adipose tissue covering the veins is reduced, allowing the vascular network beneath the skin to become more visible.
Anything below ~15% BF will almost guarantee a high level of vascularity, but you may find that you start to see some before then.
Entire books have been written on lowering BF so I won’t get too deep here, but the biggest factor will always be lowering your caloric intake while still getting all your nutrients.
I also recommend working in at least 3-4 hours of zone 2 cardio per week, regardless of your BF %.
This might be a light jog for some, or a normal walk for others, just something to get your heart pumping.
Closing Thoughts
As aforementioned, with everything physique-related, it’s important to keep in mind that genetics will always play a role.
For some people, vascularity may be something that comes naturally, others will have to work harder and potentially shed a few pounds to achieve it.
However, with some work, becoming vascular is fully possible for anyone devoted to it. 🩸
