Most health-conscious people exercise.
But 90% of those people are leaving strength, endurance, and results on the table because they are not properly fueling their workouts.
Here are 10 of Mother Nature’s most powerful pre-workout foods πŸ‘‡
Most people hear β€œpre workout” and think of the modern powder supplements that are chalked full of synthetic ingredients, additives, and suspicious β€œproprietary blends.”
The majority of these are probably doing your body more harm than good over the long run.
But that doesn’t mean what you consume before a workout isn’t important.
A properly fueled body is crucial to you getting the most out of your time spent exercising.
But instead of downing scoops of powdered cardiac arrest, you’re much better off getting this fuel from an all-natural stack.
So first, what are the criteria for a good pre-workout?
Electrolytes – These ions regulate fluid balance, transmit nerve signals, and facilitate muscle contractions.
Electrolytes are lost through sweat, which can lead to dehydration, muscle cramps, and weakness if not replenished.
Proper electrolyte levels are vital for maintaining muscle function and preventing fatigue.
Carbohydrates/Glycogen – Carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source during exercise.
They are broken down into glucose, which is stored in the form of glycogen in the muscles and liver.
Muscle glycogen provides immediate energy for high-intensity activities, while liver glycogen helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Both are essential for sustained energy.
Caffeine – Caffeine boosts focus, alertness, and energy levels by stimulating the central nervous system and increasing adrenaline.
While optional, a dose of caffeine before a workout can reduce perceived exertion, delay fatigue, and improve endurance and overall performance.
Easily digestible - The goal is to fuel your body efficiently without weighing it down right before exercise.
You want light, easily digestible foods that prevent bloating and fuel your body.
So, which natural foods best encapsulate these criteria?
10. Bananas – are rich in quick-digesting carbs and potassium, providing both energy and electrolytes. They’re also very easy on the stomach – great before endurance activities.
9. Dates – packed with natural sugars, dates are a great quick and efficient source of energy. They also contain fiber, which supports digestion.
8. Coconut Water – a natural source of electrolytes, coconut water hydrates without added sugars, chemicals, or preservatives. My go-to beverage for before and during a workout.
7. Berries – blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, etc. are a nutrient-dense, fast-acting source of carbohydrates for energy. Their high antioxidant content also combats exercise-induced oxidative stress.
6. Bee Pollen – is a nutrient powerhouse providing a mix of protein, amino acids, and vitamins. I like to sprinkle some on top of a bowl of fruit or in a smoothie.
5. Cacao – contains natural stimulants like theobromine and small amounts of caffeine. It’s also rich in antioxidants and magnesium (an essential electrolyte).
4. Watermelon – provides simple sugars for quick energy plus is a great hydrator due to its high water content. Watermelon also contains L-citrulline, which improves blood flow and reduces muscle soreness.
3. Citrus Fruits – oranges and grapefruits contain simple carbs, vitamin C, and potassium making them excellent sources of hydration and energy (and a boost to your immune system).
2. Espresso – coffee/espresso is a natural source of caffeine that provide a clean energy and antioxidant boost. A classic go-to for me.
1. Raw Honey – in terms of fast-acting, sustained energy, there is nothing more effective than raw honey.
Packed with natural sugars, raw honey contains both glucose and fructose to fully maxx out your glycogen stores.
In its raw form, honey has a rich antioxidant profile and contains healthy enzymes, promoting digestion, reducing inflammation, and offering a plethora of other health benefits.
Raw honey has been such a staple of my diet and pre-workout nutrition that it inspired me to create Vital Nectar, a 100% natural, hydrating, energy supplement for people tired of synthetic electrolyte mixes and artificial pre-workouts.
It contains a God-like mix of raw honey, ancient buried mineral salts, natural caffeine from guarana, and a pinch of true Ceylon cinnamon to increase bioavailability.
Potentially, the most potent concoction of natural ingredients out there.
After months of back and forth with different manufacturers, we’ve finally found a facility with the capabilities to keep our honey 100% raw and unpasteurized.
